president goïta launches construction of 15 new hospitals across Mali
Bamako, November 10, 2025. General of the Army Assimi GOÏTA, President of the Transition, recently presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the pivotal Presidential Emergency Hospital Project. This significant event, hosted at the Korofina Reference Health Center in Bamako’s Commune I District, marks the official start of a comprehensive program designed to profoundly enhance Mali’s national healthcare infrastructure.
Colonel-Major Assa Badiallo TOURÉ, the Minister of Health and Social Development, highlighted that this ambitious undertaking directly builds upon the conclusions drawn from the General States of Health consultations held in December 2024. These discussions had pinpointed the urgent need to boost healthcare accessibility and elevate the overall standard of medical services throughout Mali.
transforming Mali’s national hospital system
The Minister further explained that the project aims for a significant “modernization and comprehensive overhaul” of the nation’s hospital network. It involves both the construction of 15 entirely new hospitals and the conversion of existing Reference Health Centers (CSREF) within the Bamako District into fully operational District Hospitals. Crucially, this extensive construction effort is being financed entirely through the national budget. Work in Bamako is slated for completion within 12 months, while regional projects are anticipated to take 24 months.
The Presidential Emergency Hospital Project unfolds across three key components:
- The upgrade and transformation of the seven CSREF facilities located in Bamako’s various arrondissements into modern District Hospitals.
- The establishment of entirely new District Hospitals in the towns of Bla and Kangaba.
- The development of advanced Regional Hospitals in strategic locations including San, Koutiala, Bougouni, Dioïla, Nioro, Bandiagara, and Koulikoro.
These upcoming medical facilities will be equipped with state-of-the-art medical apparatus, offering expanded inpatient capacities and a diverse range of specialized services. A notable inclusion is the integration of hemodialysis units within the hospitals situated in Bamako’s 1st and 6th arrondissements, catering to vital patient care requirements.
prioritizing progress and oversight in healthcare development
Following the ceremony, the President of the Transition re-emphasized that a robust public health system is a cornerstone for national development. He instructed the Minister of Health to ensure the continuous provision of public services throughout the construction phases and to rigorously monitor adherence to contractual deadlines. President GOÏTA also underscored the project’s profound humanitarian goal: to bring high-quality medical care closer to all Malians, thereby minimizing the need for medical evacuations and alleviating pressure on existing healthcare institutions.
