Six years after Mali’s transitional leadership began, a high-profile case involving close associates of former interim President Bah N’Daw is reaching a critical stage. On Tuesday, July 14, six individuals—three civilians and three military officers—will face judges in Bamako’s criminal chambers, accused of plotting to destabilize the government.
The defendants include Colonel Kassoum Goïta, former head of Mali’s State Security Directorate, and Kalilou Doumbia, who served as Secretary-General of the Presidency during the early transition period. All six have been held in custody since 2021, vigorously denying the charges against them.
The prosecution centers on an alleged conspiracy against the transitional authorities, though specific details of the accusations have never been disclosed publicly. Colonel Goïta, unrelated to current transitional leader General Assimi Goïta, previously oversaw intelligence operations, while Doumbia managed presidential affairs between August 2020 and May 2021.
The remaining defendants consist of a State Security staff sergeant, a police commissioner, a private businessman, and a traditional spiritual advisor. Their legal team has consistently argued that this prosecution is politically motivated, targeting individuals simply for their association with Bah N’Daw, who was removed from power in the May 2021 coup.
Legal proceedings have been turbulent. In June 2022, a court granted Kalilou Doumbia and former Commissioner Moustapha Diakité of Kayes a dismissal, yet both remained detained. By January 2023, an appeals court ordered their trial, and since then, all requests for provisional release have been denied. Defense attorneys insist their clients will appear in court to refute the allegations they continue to reject.
The legal battle has seen additional developments, including a December 2021 complaint filed by defense lawyers against General Modibo Koné, the current State Security Director, alleging misconduct during arrests. That case has yet to advance in the judicial system.
The upcoming hearing represents a pivotal moment for the defendants, their legal representatives assert, expressing hope that the proceedings will finally clarify the facts and exonerate their clients.
