The ongoing struggle for dominance in northern Mali has escalated into one of its deadliest chapters yet. In a televised address on state-run television, Mali’s Chief of General Staff, General Jean Élysée Dao, delivered grim news following intense clashes in Anéfis, a critical outpost located roughly 100 kilometers south of Kidal.
Heavy losses on both sides in the fight for Anéfis
The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) bore the brunt of the offensive, with General Dao confirming the loss of around thirty soldiers, described as “martyrs,” alongside over sixty wounded, several in critical condition. The military also claimed significant casualties among the opposing coalition, which includes separatist factions like the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) and Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorists under the Jama’at Nusrat ul-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM).
Rebel groups, while acknowledging losses in a statement, did not provide exact figures but referred to the fallen as “some of their finest fighters.”
Anéfis: a pivotal stronghold in the Sahel conflict
Anéfis remains a linchpin in the battle for northern Mali. For the Malian military, backed by Russian allies, securing this area is vital to severing supply routes used by armed groups and safeguarding the critical corridor leading to the Kidal stronghold. Observers noted the ferocity of the fighting, with Malian troops and Russian reinforcements temporarily pinned down in a military camp before a heavily armed convoy, launching from Gao with aerial support, shifted the momentum back in favor of government forces. Rebel factions, however, framed their withdrawal as a “strategic retreat” to prevent civilian casualties.
