Civilian casualties mount as Mali army drone strikes hit wedding preparations

A series of aerial attacks carried out by Malian military drones on Sunday resulted in the tragic loss of at least ten civilian lives in the central town of Téné. The victims included young men gathered for a traditional collective wedding ceremony, a cultural milestone for the community. This incident underscores the deepening security crisis gripping the nation.

The strikes targeted the locality of Téné, located in the San region of central Mali. This area has become a hotspot in the ongoing security turmoil that has intensified following major offensives launched by jihadist factions—specifically the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, and the predominantly Tuareg Azavad Liberation Front (FLA)—against military positions between April 25 and 26.

In Mali’s current climate, civilians often find themselves caught in the crossfire. Accusations of collaboration with opposing groups have led to retaliatory violence, with reports of abuses committed by both armed forces and allied mercenary groups.

“Ten of our children were killed in a barrage of fire whose origin remains unclear,” shared a grieving resident of Téné, speaking on condition of anonymity. “What was meant to be a joyous celebration turned into overwhelming sorrow for our village.”

A security source, also requesting anonymity, verified the drone strikes and their devastating impact. According to the source, “the tragedy unfolded as villagers were preparing for the second edition of this traditional collective wedding—a significant cultural event for the community.”

Witnesses reported that the drones appeared to have targeted a procession of motorcycles, which may have drawn their attention. “At least nine lives were lost in an instant,” the source added. A local official independently confirmed the death toll, stating, “plans for a wedding celebration were shattered when drones struck, leaving at least ten civilians dead. It’s a profound tragedy.”

Escalating violence and its human cost

The recent escalation in violence has left Mali’s military in a precarious position. Following the late April offensives by armed groups, the junta has struggled to maintain control, particularly in key northern regions such as Kidal.

Since April 30, a road blockade has been enforced along critical routes leading to Bamako, disrupting supply chains and transportation. Reports indicate that jihadist groups have torched multiple commercial and passenger vehicles bound for the capital in recent days.

Early May witnessed further bloodshed as jihadist attacks, claimed by JNIM, resulted in numerous fatalities across central Mali.

Civil society organizations, including prominent human rights bodies, have taken legal action. On April 20, three groups filed a complaint with the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, alleging severe violations involving Malian armed forces and foreign allies.
