Wendie Renard (Olympique Lyonnais): “The score doesn’t reflect the match at all”

Following their 4-0 loss to Barcelona in the Women’s Champions League final, Olympique Lyonnais captain Wendie Renard offered her thoughts on a match that, in her view, did not match the final scoreline.

Wendie Renard (Olympique Lyonnais captain after the defeat): “The score is harsh, but honestly, it doesn’t represent how the game unfolded. Barcelona played smart and capitalized on their chances. These are world-class players. Finals are always at an elite level, and at key moments, they made the difference. We missed our opportunities, and that’s why we’re paying the price. Even after the third and fourth goals, we kept pushing, but they countered effectively. That’s football—you learn and keep improving.”

Renard emphasized the importance of perspective: “Careers and seasons aren’t always linear. Congratulations to Barcelona, and this experience is invaluable for our team, which still has room for growth. When you reach a final, you can’t let that opportunity slip away. But that’s life and football—you keep working and moving forward.”
