LFP discipline chief explains Nantes-Toulouse 0-0 verdict amid toulouse FC controversy
Sébastien Deneux, chair of the LFP disciplinary committee, defends the decision to uphold the 0-0 draw in Nantes-Toulouse, a match abandoned after Nantes fans stormed the pitch. The ruling has drawn sharp criticism from Toulouse officials.
The final-day Ligue 1 clash between Nantes and Toulouse on May 17 was abandoned before full-time when Nantes supporters invaded the pitch. Toulouse FC reacted with dismay to the LFP disciplinary committee’s decision to ratify the 0-0 score, going so far as to hint at a potential appeal.
« We deeply regret that the match could not be completed under normal conditions and question what concrete steps the club could have taken, given the circumstances, to allow play to resume. We also remain vigilant about the potential for such a decision to encourage future misconduct, » the club stated in a written response.
« The decision to uphold the score—when Nantes and its fans were responsible for the abandonment—raises serious questions. »
First, this option was introduced into the regulations only two years ago; previously, abandoned matches could only result in a 0-0 loss for the offending side or a replay. More importantly, this case stood out because neither team had any sporting stakes at play when the game was called off: Nantes were already relegated, and Toulouse, whether they drew or won, would finish ninth in Ligue 1 with either 45 or 47 points. In purely sporting terms, declaring the match lost or upholding the score had identical consequences.
« It is absolutely unacceptable for clubs and their supporters to attempt to influence the outcome of a match through their behavior and then seek to benefit from that interference. »
Why choose to uphold the score rather than declare a loss for Nantes?
The disciplinary committee’s options were designed to separate sporting outcomes from disciplinary sanctions, preventing clubs from exploiting supporter misconduct for an unfair sporting advantage. In this instance, awarding Toulouse a 3-0 technical victory would have been illogical, given the match was halted at 0-0.
Could this decision set a dangerous precedent?
No. This ruling must be viewed in its specific context: the absence of sporting stakes. In any other scenario, the outcome would almost certainly differ. We will remain unwavering in our stance: no club or fanbase should believe they can manipulate match results through abandonment and gain any advantage. Vigilance on this front will remain absolute. »
