Laurent Gbagbo re-elected to lead PPA-CI in Côte d’Ivoire

The Parti des peuples africains – Côte d’Ivoire members, gathered for their ordinary congress in Abidjan, have once again entrusted Laurent Gbagbo with the party’s leadership. At 80 years old, the former Ivorian president embarks on a fresh mandate at the helm of the political movement he established upon his return from the ICC.

At its inaugural ordinary congress held at the Palais de la Culture de Treichville in Abidjan, the Parti des peuples africains – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI) confirmed Laurent Gbagbo’s leadership on Thursday, May 14.

Addressing nearly 3,000 delegates, the veteran Ivorian statesman secured a commanding re-election to lead the political party he founded in 2020. This followed his return from the International Criminal Court (CPI), where he had been acquitted of charges related to crimes against humanity stemming from the 2010-2011 post-election crisis.

Despite turning 80, Laurent Gbagbo had previously indicated in 2025, during an interview with Alain Foka, his desire to step back from formal party duties while remaining a political force. However, succumbing to the strong encouragement of his loyal supporters, he ultimately agreed to continue his mandate at the PPA-CI’s helm.

Through this significant congress, the party aims to solidify its internal structure and invigorate its grassroots operations. PPA-CI officials also express hope that Gbagbo’s renewed leadership will pave the way for a gradual transition to a younger generation of political figures.
