Ivory Coast reiterates unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity

During an official working visit to Rabat, Ivory Coast’s leadership solidified its backing for Morocco’s sovereignty over the entire territory, including the Sahara region. This stance was formalized following high-level talks between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Ivorian counterpart Nialé Kaba.

The Ivorian delegation, led by Nialé Kaba, emphasized the consistency of Abidjan’s position, aligning it explicitly with Morocco’s stance on the Sahara question. The meeting underscored the depth of bilateral relations between the two nations, rooted in mutual trust and shared strategic priorities.

Diplomatic alignment with Morocco’s Sahara initiative

The discussions in Rabat also addressed regional developments, with Ivory Coast welcoming the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2797. The Ivorian delegation endorsed the resolution’s recognition of Morocco’s autonomy plan as the most credible framework for resolving the long-standing regional dispute.

In practical terms, Ivory Coast’s commitment was further demonstrated by its 2020 decision to open a general consulate in Laâyoune, reinforcing the tangible nature of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Nasser Bourita expressed Morocco’s deep appreciation for Ivory Coast’s steadfast position, highlighting the strengthening of South-South cooperation as a cornerstone of the Morocco-Ivory Coast partnership. The two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration across multiple domains, from economic ties to security cooperation.

Strengthening strategic partnerships in Africa

The meeting in Rabat is part of a broader trend of African nations aligning with Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue. Ivory Coast’s public endorsement of Morocco’s territorial integrity reflects a growing consensus among regional partners regarding the viability of the autonomy initiative as a lasting solution to the dispute.
