Upcoming state visits to Libreville
The presidents of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, and Guinea-Bissau, General Horta N’Tam, are set to arrive in Libreville for official visits coinciding with Gabon’s 66th independence anniversary celebrations. This announcement was made by Théophane Nzame Nze Biyoghe, spokesperson for the Gabonese presidency, in an official statement.
The Congolese leader is scheduled to land in Gabon’s capital on August 15th and will participate in the August 17th independence day festivities, which commemorate the nation’s 1960 declaration of sovereignty. Meanwhile, General Horta N’Tam will arrive on August 18th, the day after the main ceremonies. Both visits aim to strengthen bilateral ties and deepen cooperation between Gabon and the visiting nations.
Diplomatic context and regional dynamics
These high-level meetings unfold against a backdrop of significant political transitions in all three countries. In Gabon, the visits follow the institutional normalization process initiated after the August 2023 coup d’état, which brought Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema to power by deposing Ali Bongo Ondimba. The general later secured the presidency through April 2025 elections, marking the nation’s return to constitutional order.
Félix Tshisekedi, re-elected in December 2023 for a second term, leads a DRC grappling with persistent armed insurrection in its eastern regions, where the M23 rebel faction maintains control despite numerous regional and international mediation efforts.
Guinea-Bissau, meanwhile, remains in a transitional phase following the November 2025 military coup. General Horta N’Tam, then army chief of staff, assumed the presidency after the removal of incumbent Umaro Sissoco Embalo, just days after a disputed presidential election. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the takeover, suspending the electoral process and triggering ongoing negotiations between the junta and civilian authorities over the transition’s duration.
