The government of Côte d’Ivoire has once again expressed its strong support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a viable solution to the Western Sahara dispute. This position was clearly articulated during a regional seminar organized by the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24) in Managua.
The Ivorian delegation emphasized the credibility of this initiative, which has garnered backing from nearly 130 countries worldwide. They highlighted its alignment with international law principles and United Nations resolutions, particularly the 2025 Security Council Resolution 2797 that recognized the proposal’s legitimacy.
Key arguments presented by Abidjan
The Ivorian representatives outlined several compelling reasons for supporting this autonomy framework:
- Enhanced local governance: The plan empowers southern provinces to actively manage their own affairs through democratic elections and local representation in international forums.
- Human rights progress: The initiative strengthens regional commissions and cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms.
- Regional stability: Côte d’Ivoire views this as a pragmatic approach that addresses humanitarian concerns while maintaining diplomatic momentum.
During discussions, Ivorian officials also raised concerns about the humanitarian situation in the Tindouf camps, calling for urgent population census initiatives to ensure accurate assistance delivery.
Call for UN-led political resolution
In concluding statements, Côte d’Ivoire’s representatives reiterated their commitment to a United Nations-brokered political solution. They urged all parties to demonstrate flexibility and realism to achieve a lasting and mutually acceptable agreement that respects international legitimacy.
