The Centre des Libéraux Réformateurs (CLR) has officially kickstarted its party revival this weekend in Libreville, Gabon. With its next major congress just one year away, the political formation led by Jean-Boniface Assélé is determined to reorganize, reinvigorate its grassroots support, and reaffirm its backing for President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.

In the lead-up to pivotal political milestones for Gabon’s Fifth Republic, the CLR is seeking to reclaim its rightful place in the national political arena. Party leaders convened an expanded executive meeting at the Cabaret des Artistes in Libreville’s fifth district to lay the groundwork for a fresh organizational momentum.

Strategic roadmap set for 2027 congress

Addressing militants and party cadres, CLR President Jean-Boniface Assélé dismissed persistent rumors suggesting the party’s decline or imminent collapse. In a firm tone, he declared, « Once again, some have prematurely declared the CLR dead ». He emphasized that the strong turnout at the gathering was living proof of the party’s vitality and relevance.

The upcoming congress—scheduled for 2027—stands as a pivotal moment for the CLR. Party leadership views this deadline as an opportunity to reassess strategic priorities, refine policy positions, and expand the party’s footprint across all regions of Gabon. Assélé urged members to engage in unflinching self-examination of internal operations and the challenges ahead. « This meeting will allow us, without hesitation, to map out the path forward and clarify the conditions required to succeed », he stated.

To support this initiative, a dedicated reflection committee has been established to propose concrete revival measures. The CLR president also announced upcoming appointments of new officials to revitalize internal structures and energize the party base.

CLR highlights role in Gabon’s transition period

The weekend gathering also featured the presentation of the 2024–2025 activity report. The document highlights the CLR’s active involvement in key transitional milestones, including the national referendum and presidential election campaigns. Through this review, the party seeks to underscore its integral role in shaping Gabon’s institutional changes since August 30, 2023, and its alignment with the government’s policy direction under President Oligui Nguema.

In a shifting political landscape where multiple parties are recalibrating their positions, the CLR is positioning itself to remain a significant voice in public discourse. The challenge now lies in converting this revival drive into tangible grassroots momentum capable of influencing future electoral outcomes and strengthening the foundations of Gabon’s Fifth Republic.
