Lac Tchad : Boko Haram en fuite après des opérations militaires conjointes

Bombardments target jihadist strongholds

Since last Friday, the Chadian military has been executing air raids against Boko Haram strongholds located on remote islands across Lake Chad. This vast marshland region borders Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon. Reports from local sources indicate that jihadist fighters, accompanied by their families, have departed islands such as Dogon Chukwu, Kangarwa, and Gashakar, using small boats. Additionally, clashes have reportedly occurred between Chadian soldiers and jihadist combatants on Kaukeri Island, considered a significant base for the group in the area.

Fishermen caught in the crossfire

The ongoing military operations have unfortunately affected civilian populations. Dozens of Nigerian fishermen, who operate on islands under Boko Haram’s influence, are believed to have been killed during the aerial attacks. Video footage shows several seriously wounded individuals receiving medical care at a hospital in Bosso, Niger. In this area, many fishermen continue to work in zones controlled by jihadist factions, where they are compelled to pay taxes imposed by Boko Haram.

Retaliation after deadly assaults

These military actions come as a direct response to several lethal attacks against the Chadian army. Last week, Chad declared three days of national mourning following the deaths of two generals in a surprise ambush. Just days prior, an assault on a military outpost situated along the shores of Lake Chad resulted in the fatalities of at least 24 Chadian soldiers. According to intelligence information, the aerial strikes are a coordinated effort involving Chad, Nigeria, and Niger, with each nation deploying two combat aircraft.

Persistent regional instability

The jihadist insurgency, spearheaded by Boko Haram and its rival group Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), has caused thousands of deaths and led to the displacement of millions across the Lake Chad basin since 2009. In response to the spread of violence into neighboring countries, regional governments have reactivated their Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to strengthen their collective efforts against armed jihadist organizations.
