In a significant move to bolster regional stability, Chad and Russia have solidified their military and diplomatic alliance, with a landmark agreement signed in Moscow on July 14. The pact focuses on enhancing security across the Sahel-Sahara belt, reflecting both nations’ commitment to combating shared threats.

Military and diplomatic cooperation take center stage

During a joint press conference with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Chad’s top diplomat, Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul, underscored the strategic importance of deepening defense ties. The highlight of the discussions was the signing of a visa waiver agreement for holders of diplomatic passports, a milestone in easing bilateral exchanges between the two countries.

Lavrov also addressed global and regional security challenges, condemning what Russia describes as Ukrainian ‘terrorist acts’ in the Black and Azov Seas. He emphasized the critical role of Russo-African collaboration in countering terrorism, a theme that resonated strongly with Chad’s leadership.

A unified front against regional threats

Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Déby will represent the country at the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit in October, reaffirming N’Djamena’s active participation in strengthening continental security frameworks. Minister Fadoul praised Russia’s contributions to stabilizing the Sahel, expressing confidence that joint efforts with regional partners will yield tangible progress in the fight against militant groups.
