During the 4th joint cooperation committee meeting on July 6th, the Ministries of Transport for Chad and Egypt formalized a memorandum of understanding, granting three Egyptian airlines access to Chad’s airspace. The agreement includes two passenger carriers—whose identities remain undisclosed—and one dedicated cargo operator. In an official statement, the move is framed as a push to « foster dynamic air cooperation, enhance passenger mobility, enhance commercial exchanges, and strengthen bilateral ties. »
Operationally, this decision arrives at a pivotal moment for Chad’s aviation sector, which has been recalibrating since Air France’s departure in 2025. While the memorandum aims to drive down ticket prices and improve transit experiences in Cairo, it also positions EgyptAir—the national carrier of Egypt—as a potential key player in Chad. The initiative targets a specific demographic: Chadian students in North Africa. The arrival of these new operators is expected to diversify N’Djamena’s logistics partners and uphold its global connectivity.
Strengthening trade and freight opportunities
Beyond passenger travel, the cargo component signals a strategic push to formalize bilateral trade flows, which currently remain limited. According to data from Chad’s National Institute of Statistics, Economics, and Demography (Inseed), Egypt does not rank among the country’s top trading partners. Yet, some analysts suggest that Chad’s pivot toward attracting mining investments to reduce its reliance on hydrocarbons could align with Egypt’s demand for extractive resources. The new air freight capacity may serve as a critical logistics bridge for future extractive agreements.
Regional integration and air transport networks
At the sub-regional level, this agreement reinforces North African carriers’ presence in the Cemac zone. The anticipated entry of carriers such as EgyptAir into N’Djamena will help densify air transport networks in Central Africa, where the airline already operates in Cameroon.
