Chad’s Supreme Court locks in Succès Masra’s 20-year prison term

The Supreme Court of Chad has dismissed the final appeal of former Prime Minister and opposition leader Succès Masra, cementing his 20-year prison sentence and sparking widespread outrage among his supporters.

In an official statement, Les Transformateurs described the court’s decision as a missed opportunity for justice, arguing that the ruling reaffirms what they call a politically motivated prosecution against their leader.

They emphasized that the ruling underscores the arbitrary nature of Masra’s detention—now stretching beyond 370 days—insisting it is part of a deliberate strategy to silence a prominent critic of the government. The party also condemned the court’s refusal to acknowledge global calls for Masra’s release, justice, and adherence to the rule of law.

Meanwhile, concerns are growing over Masra’s deteriorating health, with allies warning of a significant decline in his condition since his imprisonment.

Masra was convicted of criminal association and complicity in murder following the Mandakao massacre in western Logone province in May 2025. With all domestic legal avenues exhausted, his legal team is now considering escalating the case to international courts.
