The highly contentious Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal, originally contested on January 18th, continues to be a major talking point in football circles. The trophy, initially awarded to Senegal’s Lions of Terranga, was later reallocated to Morocco’s Lions of the Atlas two months later, following a definitive decision by the CAF. This tumultuous final was marred by significant disturbances, leading to confirmed prison sentences for several supporters. In a recent development, three of these individuals have now been released.
Reports this Saturday indicated that three Senegalese fans had been set free. These supporters, who had received three-month prison sentences for acts of « hooliganism » committed on the sidelines of the match, were held in a Moroccan detention facility.
The charges against them included « acts of violence, particularly against law enforcement, damage to sports equipment, pitch invasion, and throwing projectiles ». While these three are now at liberty, they were not the only ones incarcerated. Media sources have highlighted that fifteen other supporters are still serving prison terms ranging from six months to one year.
Senegal-Morocco: ongoing legal challenges and appeals
During an appeal hearing on Monday, the sentences for the accused were upheld. This outcome occurred despite the prosecution’s request for an increase in penalties, a stance that drew considerable ire from the defense. Lawyers for the supporters argued during the proceedings that those who entered the pitch did so involuntarily, propelled onto the field by a significant crowd surge. One of their attorneys notably stated, « Mistakes were made, and the individuals truly involved in what transpired are located in Senegal and are not present here ».
Regarding the final attribution of the championship trophy, a definitive decision remains outstanding. Even though Morocco has been formally designated the 0-3 winner via a technical decision, the Senegalese Football Federation has elevated the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) for a final ruling.
