diplomatic reinforcement strengthens Morocco’s position on Sahara
The Republic of Burundi has once again expressed its unwavering support for Morocco’s full sovereignty over its territory, including the Western Sahara region. This commitment was reaffirmed during high-level talks in Rabat between Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edouard Bizimana, and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, as part of an official working visit to the Kingdom.
In a joint communiqué concluding the meetings, Bujumbura not only reiterated its backing for Rabat’s autonomy initiative but also emphasized that this proposal represents the most credible and realistic path to resolving the decades-long regional dispute. The Burundian government further expressed its strong support for United Nations-led efforts to advance negotiations based on this framework.
african solidarity grows around Morocco’s autonomy plan
This diplomatic endorsement follows a pattern of increasing African support for Morocco’s position on the Western Sahara question. Burundi’s stance aligns with other African nations that have recognized the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the foundation for a lasting political solution. The statement comes shortly after the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which the Burundian government praised for formally recognizing the plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the basis for a fair, sustainable, and mutually acceptable political settlement.
Morocco’s ongoing diplomatic outreach continues to expand and consolidate international backing for its initiative, as the Kingdom strengthens its position on the global stage.
