The government of Burkina Faso is launching a monumental energy offensive. Under the new National Energy Pact 2026-2030, the nation aims to secure over 10.3 billion USD to link nearly 18 million additional residents to the power grid before the decade ends.

This represents a decisive strategic shift for Burkina Faso. To bridge the long-standing energy gap that hinders socio-economic progress, the state has designed an expansive financial and technical roadmap. The goal is to mobilize 6,235 billion FCFA (approximately 10.39 billion USD) to fundamentally reshape the national energy landscape by 2030.

This record-breaking investment targets the electrification of 17.9 million more people. For a population where rural communities still largely lack power, this initiative carries the weight of a total societal transformation.

Supporting the “Mission 300” initiative

This large-scale project is not isolated. It aligns with “Mission 300,” an ambitious global alliance led by the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB). This continental program focuses on lifting millions of Africans out of energy poverty.

By synchronizing its 2026-2030 National Energy Pact with this international momentum, Burkina Faso is positioning itself to secure the vital partnerships needed to turn political visions into tangible infrastructure on the ground.

Energy independence and a diverse mix

These massive investments address two critical needs: boosting domestic production and diversifying energy sources. To end the reliance on expensive imports, the strategy focuses on decentralized infrastructure and the vast potential of renewable energy, particularly solar power. The capital will expand the national interconnected grid managed by the Société nationale d’électricité du Burkina (SONABEL) while also deploying mini-grids and standalone solar kits for isolated rural regions.

Driving national economic growth

Beyond lighting up homes, this 6,200 billion FCFA plan serves as the foundation for a local industrial revolution. Reliable and affordable energy is the essential requirement for upgrading social services like healthcare and education, fostering job creation, and processing agricultural and mineral raw materials locally. By connecting 17.9 million more inhabitants in just a few years, Burkina Faso intends to establish the pillars of its economic sovereignty.
