In this inaugural episode of an exclusive series, we meet an author on their native soil. Today, it’s Roukiata Ouedraogo, a multi-talented figure born in Burkina Faso who opens up about her childhood, early beginnings, and lifelong struggles. A deep conversation recorded in Ouagadougou.

An artist shaped by two worlds

«I am a writer, comedian, and performer of Franco-Burkinabè heritage. Born in Burkina Faso, I grew up between Fada N’Gourma and Ouagadougou before relocating to France in the early 2000s. My artistic journey has been a fusion of theater, writing, humor, radio, and activism.»

Roukiata Ouedraogo’s career reflects her dual identity, blending the warmth of her homeland with the dynamism of her adopted country. Her story is one of resilience, creativity, and unyielding connection to her roots, even after years abroad.

Ouagadougou Pressé book cover by Roukiata Ouedraogo

«In her tiny attic room in Paris’s 18th arrondissement, Roukiata packs her bags: tomorrow, she’s heading home to Burkina Faso. What to take? What to leave behind? How to bring joy to everyone without completely emptying her luggage? From colorful tops bought at Parisian markets to a two-slice toaster for her mother, she recounts her wild youth as a spirited young woman from the outskirts of Ouagadougou, all the way to her current life in the bustling Parisian neighborhood known as Little Africa.»

This vivid narrative transports listeners to the streets of Ouagadougou, where braised chicken vendors, neighborhood gossips, and hairdressers of Château-Rouge come to life. It’s a celebration of childhood, family, friendship, and the beauty of difference, brought to life through Aude Massot’s lively illustrations.

Du miel sous les galettes book cover by Roukiata Ouedraogo

With a light yet nostalgic touch, Ouedraogo’s prose paints a tender portrait of her childhood in Burkina Faso. She recounts the stifling droughts, torrential rains, and the warmth of its people, as well as corruption and hardship. She shares intimate details of her family, including her father’s unjust arrest and her mother’s unwavering strength—a pillar who raised seven children alone by selling galettes on her doorstep. For Roukiata, these honey-drizzled galettes will forever evoke the flavors of childhood and the land she holds dear.
