An influential Sunni imam in Burkina Faso, Mohamad Ishaq Kindo, was taken into custody on Tuesday in Ouagadougou by masked security forces. The arrest followed his public criticism of a new bill regulating religious freedoms, sparking immediate backlash and protests in the capital.
Tense arrest sparks unrest in Ouagadougou
According to relatives and the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina Faso, the operation occurred on the eve of Eid al-Fitr. Security forces, including police and soldiers, moved in to detain the imam, leading to clashes with worshippers. Reports indicate several injuries during the intervention, while the cleric’s current whereabouts remain undisclosed.
Criticism of new religious freedoms law
Two days prior to his detention, an audio recording widely circulated online captured the imam condemning a March-approved bill that tightens oversight of religious practices. In his sermon, Mohamad Ishaq Kindo warned authorities against restricting public prayers and urged leaders to “reconsider their actions.”
Protests met with force
Hundreds gathered in Ouagadougou shortly after the arrest, demanding the cleric’s release. Security personnel dispersed the crowd using tear gas. The Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina Faso called for calm, urging restraint and peaceful resolution.
