Burkina Faso: influential imam detained amid regime criticism

Tense arrest sparks unrest in Ouagadougou

According to relatives and the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina Faso, the operation occurred on the eve of Eid al-Fitr. Security forces, including police and soldiers, moved in to detain the imam, leading to clashes with worshippers. Reports indicate several injuries during the intervention, while the cleric’s current whereabouts remain undisclosed.

Criticism of new religious freedoms law

Two days prior to his detention, an audio recording widely circulated online captured the imam condemning a March-approved bill that tightens oversight of religious practices. In his sermon, Mohamad Ishaq Kindo warned authorities against restricting public prayers and urged leaders to “reconsider their actions.”

Protests met with force

Hundreds gathered in Ouagadougou shortly after the arrest, demanding the cleric’s release. Security personnel dispersed the crowd using tear gas. The Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina Faso called for calm, urging restraint and peaceful resolution.
