Attaques au Burkina Faso : au moins 22 militaires et civils tués ce week-end

Recent jihadist group offensives across Burkina Faso have tragically claimed the lives of at least 22 individuals, including military personnel and civilian volunteers. The military junta, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, is intensifying its counter-operations in response to this persistent and alarming security situation, which has plagued the nation for several years.

A minimum of 22 soldiers and civilian auxiliaries supporting the army were killed in fresh attacks by suspected jihadists this past weekend in northern Burkina Faso.

Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who seized power in a September 2022 coup, Burkina Faso has endured a decade of devastating offensives by jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, affecting vast swathes of its territory.

On Saturday morning, the base of a Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) in Di, near Dédougou, came under a jihadist assault. Despite a valiant defense, the attack resulted in the deaths of at least fourteen soldiers and seven members of the Volontaires pour la défense de la patrie (VDP), civilian auxiliaries who fight alongside the military.

The VDP, numbering in the thousands, bear a heavy cost in the ongoing anti-jihadist struggle.

Another assault targeted the detachment in Solhan, in the northeast, leading to several fatalities, including an officer. A large-scale retaliatory operation was launched in response.

Further confirming these incidents, significant human and material losses were reported without more precise details. Additionally, on Sunday, a military post in Séguénéga, located near Kaya in the center-north, was attacked.

Since Saturday, coordinated counter-operations and pursuit efforts have neutralized dozens of terrorists and led to the recovery of various military equipment and logistical resources.

Solhan was previously the site of one of the country’s deadliest attacks in June 2021, which claimed between 130 and 160 civilian lives.

On Monday, the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, claimed responsibility for several attacks against Burkinabe army positions in multiple towns, asserting the deaths of numerous Burkinabe soldiers.

Diplomatic rupture

For several years, the authoritarian, repressive, and sovereignist military regime has ceased to publicly announce the number of soldiers killed in attacks. It occasionally releases figures from its counter-operations, which cannot be independently verified.

Last week, the Burkinabe General Staff issued a communiqué stating that it had eliminated over 400 terrorists following
