The Government of Burkina Faso has officially severed all diplomatic ties with France by closing its embassy in Paris. All twelve Burkinabe diplomats stationed in the French capital have returned to Ouagadougou, where they were greeted by Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré.

During the formal handover, the diplomats presented both the national flag and the embassy’s keys to the Minister, marking the definitive end of Burkina Faso’s diplomatic mission in France. Authorities have also dismissed claims that any Burkinabe diplomats sought asylum while in France.

The decision to terminate relations was made on June 26, following Burkina Faso’s announcement of the break. In response, France recalled its diplomats from Ouagadougou in early July, and Burkinabe representatives were given a strict deadline to leave French territory.

The Burkinabe Government justified this decisive move, citing what it calls France’s « sustained interference » that allegedly undermines Burkina Faso’s national sovereignty. Meanwhile, France labeled the decision as « unjustified and hostile, » expressing concern over the deteriorating relations between the two nations.

This diplomatic rupture aligns with a pattern that emerged after Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s rise to power in September 2022. Since then, Burkina Faso has gradually distanced itself from its former French allies. The recent withdrawal of French military forces from Burkinabe soil further underscores this strategic shift.

Alongside this, Burkina Faso has been actively expanding its diplomatic and economic ties with Russia, Turkey, and Iran, with a strong focus on security partnerships and international cooperation. The closure of the embassy in Paris represents a pivotal moment in Burkina Faso’s foreign relations, signifying a clear realignment in Ouagadougou’s international partnerships and setting the stage for a new chapter in its diplomatic history, the long-term consequences of which will be closely monitored worldwide.
