The Republic of Bénin has accelerated its efforts to restore forested landscapes. On Monday, June 1st, 2026, the Public Primary School (EPP) Hêkandji in the municipality of Tori-Bossito became the epicenter of the 42nd National Tree Planting Day. This flagship initiative marked the official commencement of the national reforestation campaign for the 2026-2027 fiscal year.

a thematic shift: empowering the next generation

This year’s theme, “Youth as forest ambassadors for a greener Bénin”, underscores a transformative approach to climate action. Since its establishment in 1985, the event has been observed across all twelve departments of the country, reflecting a national commitment to environmental stewardship.

uniting for ecological renewal

The celebration unfolded as a unified mobilization for climate resilience. Political and administrative leaders, senior forestry officials, local representatives, development partners, and community members converged on a shared objective: reversing land degradation and ensuring the sustainable restoration of the nation’s vegetation cover.

The decision to host the national launch in a school setting was deliberate. It signals Bénin’s strategic focus on fostering eco-citizenship from an early age. By designating students as Forest Ambassadors, the government has entrusted them with a civic duty—monitoring saplings and promoting environmental best practices within their communities.

reforestation as a climate imperative

With the Sahel’s climate challenges intensifying—particularly in agriculture and water access—this year’s reforestation campaign is more critical than ever. While the ceremonial planting of the first saplings on June 1st symbolized commitment, authorities emphasized the long-term challenge of maintenance and survival.

Local engagement and technical and financial partnerships will be pivotal in ensuring high survival rates for newly planted trees. The campaign reflects Bénin’s alignment with international commitments to combat desertification, demonstrating that ecological transition is not a distant goal but an urgent, present-day priority.
