The Republic of Benin is positioning itself as a gateway to West Africa’s thriving markets, according to Corinne Amori Brunet, the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. Speaking during an interview in Seoul on the sidelines of the Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, she emphasized Benin’s strategic advantages for South Korean businesses seeking expansion in the region.

«While Benin may appear as a small market in isolation, it offers far greater opportunities,» she remarked, highlighting the nation’s political stability, investment-friendly policies, and prime geographic location. As a member of both the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), Benin serves as a critical maritime and logistics hub for West Africa.

The minister underscored that Benin’s focus is not on extracting natural resources but on fostering trade, industrial development, and attracting investors. «Even if geological studies reveal potential critical minerals, our priority remains building a robust ecosystem for regional commerce,» she noted. She cited ongoing reforms under President Romuald Wadagni that have modernized infrastructure and streamlined business processes, including:

  • Digitalization of customs procedures at the Port of Cotonou, West Africa’s busiest maritime gateway.
  • Development of the Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone, a key industrial hub.
  • Implementation of a digital administration system to improve efficiency.

Benin and south korea strengthen economic and cultural ties

Corinne Amori Brunet expressed optimism about deepening cooperation with South Korea in investment, industrial development, and cultural exchanges. «Both nations share a history of rapid transformation—Korea in less than a generation, and Benin over the past decade through disciplined reforms.» She pointed to Benin’s recent cultural initiatives, including the 2021 repatriation of 26 looted artifacts from France and plans to host a traveling exhibition of these treasures in Seoul.

The Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting marked a pivotal moment in advancing concrete projects following the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit. «This gathering is a milestone in turning past commitments into actionable partnerships,» she concluded.

As Benin’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Corinne Amori Brunet is on her first official international visit, signaling the country’s commitment to strengthening ties with global partners.
