Benin senate elects Patrice Talon as new president

The Beninese Senate has officially inaugurated its first Bureau, marking a significant milestone in the establishment of the upper house as mandated by the Constitution. The election took place on August 6, 2026, in Porto-Novo, bringing together senators to vote for their leadership.

Senate leadership takes shape with new appointments

Following the vote, Patrice Talon was elected as President of the Senate, a role that places him at the helm of the upper chamber’s operations. His responsibilities include overseeing legislative activities and ensuring the smooth functioning of the institution. Louis Vlavonou has been appointed Vice-President, supporting Talon in his duties and stepping in whenever necessary.

Alassane Séidou has been named Rapporteur, tasked with documenting and reporting on Senate proceedings, while Adidjatou Mathys will serve as Deputy Rapporteur, assisting Séidou in fulfilling his mandate.

The Bureau of the Senate serves as the governing body responsible for organizing and managing the chamber’s activities. With these appointments finalized, the Beninese Senate is now fully equipped to carry out its constitutional duties without delay.
