Benin’s Republican Police have escalated enforcement of traffic laws, issuing more than 100 fines to drivers in just 48 hours as part of a sweeping national operation targeting dangerous road behaviors.
Traffic violations targeted in coordinated police operation
The crackdown, which began on September 20, 2026, has seen heavy police presence at key junctions and arterial roads across major urban centers. In Cotonou, over 40 motorcyclists were stopped in just one hour in the Fidjrossè district, while multiple motorists were apprehended along the Marina Boulevard.
Drivers face strict penalties for common traffic offenses, including 20,000 CFA francs for using a phone while driving, 10,000 CFA francs for vehicle overloading, 6,000 CFA francs for driving against traffic, and 5,000 CFA francs for failing to wear a helmet.
National enforcement extends beyond Cotonou
This intensified traffic control is not confined to Benin’s economic capital. Police units have been deployed in Abomey-Calavi, Porto-Novo, Sèmè-Podji, Ouidah, Bohicon, and Parakou, signaling a nationwide effort to enforce road safety regulations.
The operation aims to curb risky behavior, reduce road fatalities, and promote sustainable compliance with traffic laws across Benin’s road network.
Focus shifts to high-risk intersections and timing
Enforcement is particularly rigorous at intersections and during peak travel times, with officers actively monitoring compliance with traffic signals. Failure to stop at red lights results in immediate penalties under the national road safety code.
