Arsenal’s pursuit of Premier League glory could trigger a major shake-up at Emirates Stadium this summer, with several first-team stars facing uncertain futures despite the club’s title ambitions. Former Gunners defender Mikaël Silvestre has suggested that Gabriel Martinelli might force a transfer if the club secures the championship, citing the Brazilian international’s limited game time as a key concern.
Championship dreams hang in the balance
Arsenal stand on the brink of ending their 20-year title drought, needing just two victories to overtake Manchester City at the summit. A win against already-relegated Burnley followed by a clash with Crystal Palace could hand the north London side the trophy for the first time since 2004. Their title rivals face an uphill battle, with City needing maximum points from their remaining fixtures while navigating Europa League commitments.
The Gunners’ potential triumph would mark a remarkable turnaround under Mikel Arteta, who could become only the second manager since Arsène Wenger to lift the league title for Arsenal. However, the celebrations might be short-lived if key players decide the time is right to pursue fresh challenges.
Martinelli’s future hangs by a thread
Silvestre, who made nearly 300 appearances for Arsenal between 2008 and 2013, believes Martinelli’s situation has become untenable. The 24-year-old Brazilian, despite making over 100 appearances in each of the past two seasons, has predominantly featured as a substitute this campaign, starting just ten Premier League games. His international commitments with Brazil—where he has earned 22 caps—have only added to the frustration of limited first-team action at club level.
The former defender argues that securing a Premier League winners’ medal would present the perfect opportunity for Martinelli to seek new horizons. ‘He’s an international player who wants to play regularly,’ Silvestre noted. ‘With Leandro Trossard currently preferred, Martinelli might look elsewhere. If he leaves after winning the title, it would be the ideal moment—but Arsenal would need to find a suitable replacement.’
Potential replacements emerge
Arsenal have reportedly set their sights on Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola as a potential long-term solution if Martinelli departs. The 21-year-old French winger has shown glimpses of his potential in Ligue 1, though Silvestre suggests he still has room for improvement. ‘Barcola is a talented player with excellent individual qualities,’ he explained. ‘He’s strong in duels, creates space, and delivers key passes, though his finishing needs refinement. He’s not yet a guaranteed starter in European competitions, but his ceiling is undeniably high.’
The Gunners’ summer transfer strategy appears to hinge on two outcomes: whether they can retain their title challenge and which players will remain at the club. With Arteta’s squad undergoing inevitable evolution, the next few months promise to be as pivotal off the pitch as they are on it.
