Anthony Da Silva outlines bold vision for Mali’s football future
Exactly one month after signing his contract, the newly appointed head coach of Mali’s national football team, Anthony Da Silva, made his first public appearance in Bamako. The Portuguese tactician took the opportunity to unveil his comprehensive plan for the Aigles du Mali, centered on three core pillars: excellence, identity, and playing style.
The coach emphasized his commitment to building a competitive yet inclusive squad, governed by clear principles and unwavering discipline. His ultimate goal is to instill a winning mentality across the team, ensuring both on-field success and long-term sustainability.
« My mission is to restore pride and joy to Malian football fans. This journey won’t be easy, but we’ll progress methodically, one step at a time, » Da Silva stated during his press conference, blending cautious optimism with ambitious determination.
Building a united yet selective squad
The new coach has established strict but transparent selection criteria. « National pride is non-negotiable, as is discipline. Performance and attitude will determine who wears the national colors, » he explained.
Despite these high standards, Da Silva insists the door remains open to all eligible players. « Whether they play in Mali’s domestic league or abroad, whether they’re 17 or 35 years old—if they meet our standards, they’ll have a chance, » he declared.
Offensive football and killer instinct
On the tactical front, the coach envisions an assertive Mali team that takes control of matches. « I want my teams to dictate the tempo. We must dominate possession and be proactive in building attacks, » he asserted. Da Silva particularly stressed the need for greater efficiency in the final third, an area where Mali has struggled in recent years.
CAN 2027 as the first major test
Time is of the essence. The upcoming Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers in September will serve as Da Silva’s first major evaluation. Mali faces a challenging group alongside Cape Verde—recently undefeated against football powerhouses Spain, Uruguay, and Argentina in the World Cup—along with Liberia and Rwanda.
To meet this challenge, the coach plans to work closely with the Malian Football Federation and the National Technical Directorate. « This will be a collective effort, » he noted, summarizing his approach with three words: « honesty, transparency, and relentless work. »
