Strengthening security cooperation in the Sahel
The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is steadily reinforcing its strategic achievements across multiple domains, as highlighted by Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakary Yaou Sangaré. During a recent interview, he emphasized the progress made by the three founding members—Niger, Mali, and Bénin—in deepening their collaborative efforts.
Unified military framework bolsters regional defense
A cornerstone of this progress is the establishment of a joint military command, headquartered in Niamey. This operational headquarters serves as a pivotal hub for coordinating security operations, ensuring a more synchronized response to emerging threats across the Sahel. The initiative underscores the AES’s commitment to collective security and regional stability.
Diplomatic unity: a shared voice on the global stage
On the diplomatic front, the AES has made strides in unifying its international representation. A joint diplomatic passport and enhanced coordination among member states’ embassies are now in place, enabling the confederation to present cohesive positions in global forums. This move aims to amplify the Sahel’s voice and defend shared interests on the world stage.
Beyond security: economic and media integration
The AES is also expanding its integration efforts beyond defense. Plans include the launch of a regional investment bank to fund development projects, alongside the creation of joint media outlets—television, radio, and print—to strengthen institutional communication and combat misinformation targeting the Sahel.
It’s important to note that international recognition remains a sovereign decision for each AES member state, reflecting their independent yet collaborative approach to regional governance.
Solidarity and commitment to regional stability
In a gesture of solidarity, a high-level AES delegation led by General Célestin Simporé visited Bamako to honor the late General Sadio Camara of Mali. The delegation, received by General Assimi Goïta, conveyed condolences from Burkina Faso and Niger, reaffirming the AES’s unwavering resolve to combat armed groups in the region.
The visit also served as an opportunity to pay tribute to General Camara’s legacy in advancing Sahelian military cooperation. The AES leadership reiterated its determination to intensify counter-terrorism efforts, ensuring sustained security for the Sahel’s populations.
