The national aviation sector took a major step forward in Dakar as Air Sénégal officially welcomed its newly acquired Boeing 737-800, proudly named “Gorée”. This addition marks a strategic milestone aimed at strengthening the country’s domestic fleet and reinforcing its aerial sovereignty.
This major investment was made possible through direct financial support from the Senegalese government, coordinated under the leadership of Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye, the Minister of Land and Air Transport. Air Sénégal emphasizes that this acquisition reflects a clear political vision to equip the country with a modern aviation tool capable of matching its economic, tourism, and global ambitions, guided by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
Technical capacity and cabin comfort
The single-aisle plane, a prominent model from the reliable Boeing 737 Next Generation family, is highly regarded for its adaptability on short and medium-haul routes. It will provide the national carrier with much-needed capacity to expand its regional network. The cabin is configured in a two-class layout, offering a total of 174 seats: 12 in Business class and 162 in Economy class, all fitted with high-quality Recaro seats. The aircraft spans 39.5 meters in length with a wingspan of 35.8 meters, and includes three onboard restrooms and three galleys.

Choosing the name “Gorée” carries profound historical weight. As a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978, this island stands as a global symbol of remembrance, human resilience, and dialogue. Air Sénégal intends to use this aircraft as a flying ambassador, carrying this meaningful name across African and international skies to connect Senegal’s history with its diaspora and the wider world.
