The Côte d’Ivoire Embassy in the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco recently voiced its profound disapproval following comments made by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the La France insoumise party, during a public gathering in France. The embassy, in a statement released on Thursday in Paris, asserted that these remarks constituted an attack on Ivorian institutions, the Ivorian populace, and President Alassane Ouattara.

Ambassador Maurice Kouakou Bandaman’s statement detailed Mélenchon’s engagement with Ivorian political affairs, specifically citing his accusations that the head of state had systematically sidelined opponents during the nation’s most recent presidential election and secured a fourth term, which Mélenchon controversially labeled as «unconstitutional».

The diplomatic mission characterized these declarations as «irresponsible, disrespectful, offensive, and demeaning». It further stressed that the French politician possesses «no legitimate authority, standing, or expertise» to pass judgment on the Ivorian institutions responsible for organizing and validating the country’s various electoral processes.

The embassy underscored Côte d’Ivoire’s status as a sovereign nation since its independence on August 7, 1960. It firmly stated that no foreign political figure has the right to make what it considers offensive statements concerning the country.

Furthermore, the embassy highlighted the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and France, relationships it described as rooted in mutual respect and strengthened under the leadership of both Félix Houphouët-Boigny and Alassane Ouattara. The statement suggested that any political leader aspiring to France’s highest office should prioritize the interests of these crucial bilateral relations.

Concluding its declaration, the Côte d’Ivoire Embassy to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco announced its intention to initiate «all appropriate legal actions». This measure aims to address the remarks, which it views as an affront to the Ivorian people and their president, before the relevant legal authorities.
