The United States Embassy in Rabat hosted its annual National Day reception on Tuesday, commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence. For the first time, the celebration took place at the historic site of Chellah.

The event brought together senior Moroccan officials, diplomats, and partners from both the public and private sectors. It served to highlight the nearly two and a half centuries of friendship and cooperation between the United States and the Kingdom of Morocco.

Morocco’s historic role as the first nation to recognize the independence of the United States was a key theme, underscoring one of America’s most long-standing diplomatic relationships.

Discussions throughout the evening emphasized the strength of the bilateral partnership, which spans diplomacy, security, trade, and investment. The growing collaboration in areas such as innovation, infrastructure, and economic development was also a focal point.

The enduring American presence in Morocco was highlighted, from the American Legation in Tanger, the oldest U.S. diplomatic property in the world, to the recently inaugurated U.S. Consulate General in Casablanca. This continuity reflects a shared commitment to a forward-looking partnership.

During his address, the U.S. Ambassador to Rabat, Richard Duke Buchan III, noted that the 250th-anniversary celebration is an opportunity to honor “a partnership rooted in history, strengthened by trust, and resolutely focused on the next 250 years.”

“This partnership testifies to our commitment to strengthening the economic and human ties between our peoples, notably through efforts that support His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision of making the Moroccan Sahara a hub for transatlantic partnership and opportunity,” the Ambassador added.
