Tchad: Strengthening agricultural export expertise to meet global standards

In a strategic move to bolster the country’s agricultural competitiveness, the World Bank and Chad’s National Investment and Export Agency (ANIE) recently conducted a specialized training session in N’Djamena. The program focused on enhancing skills in agricultural export and import management, international trade standards, and plant and animal quarantine systems.

Organized under the Agricultural Sector Resilience Program (PRSA), the event brought together public and private sector stakeholders from across Chad’s agricultural value chain. Participants included professionals from trade ministries, sanitary and phytosanitary control bodies, production sectors, food processing industries, and export promotion agencies.

Addressing key export challenges for Chadian producers

Gotoraye Arnaud, Coordinator of the Agricultural Market Dashboard PRSA-TD, highlighted the persistent obstacles faced by Chadian producers in accessing international markets. These challenges span from intricate export procedures and compliance with international quality and safety standards to the implementation of sanitary and phytosanitary measures.

The training aimed to equip participants with essential skills in international certifications, export logistics, and customs risk prevention. By mastering these areas, Chadian businesses can navigate global trade requirements more effectively and reduce barriers to market entry.

Aligning with national economic diversification goals

Dadi Adoum Arsin, Deputy Director General of ANIE, emphasized that this initiative directly supports the Government of Chad’s strategic priorities. These include economic diversification, local value addition, private sector development, and export promotion as outlined in the National Development Plan ‘Chad Connexion 2030’.

The plan envisions the private sector as a key driver of growth, job creation, and regional economic integration. To achieve these objectives, Chad must not only increase production but also expand its export capacity. Export promotion thus emerges as a critical lever for achieving economic sovereignty.

The African Continental Free Trade Area opportunity

The implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents a game-changing opportunity for Chad. The agreement creates a market of over 1.4 billion consumers. To capitalize on this, Chad must prioritize quality enhancement, standardization, certification, and capacity building for its operators.

Through initiatives like this training, ANIE is positioning itself as a catalyst for growth and a facilitator of trade. The agency aims to create an ecosystem where businesses can access information, technical support, market opportunities, and strategic partnerships. By doing so, ANIE seeks to elevate Chadian expertise and products on the international stage.

This training session marks another significant step toward building a more competitive agricultural sector, fostering high-performing enterprises, and integrating Chad more deeply into regional and global trade networks. The collective commitment to these goals reflects a shared vision for a stronger, more resilient Chadian economy.
