Ousmane Sonko’s party takes a firm stand in Senegal’s political standoff

Just seven days after Ousmane Sonko was removed as Prime Minister and a new government was sworn in, tensions between the leader of Pastef-Les Patriotes and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye have intensified. Earlier attempts to negotiate ministerial positions for party officials collapsed after an impasse over governance principles. In an official statement released on June 1 by Pastef’s Executive Committee (COMEX) and shared by Sonko on his social media page, the party declared it would not participate in the new administration.

The statement outlined that multiple discussions had taken place in recent days between Pastef leaders and the president to align on the new cabinet’s structure. The party emphasized it acted « with full responsibility » and in line with its internal directives. A lengthy meeting on the morning of June 1 between Faye and Sonko revealed some common ground, yet fundamental disagreements persisted regarding the role of the parliamentary majority in shaping executive power.

Governance disputes derail coalition talks

Following the meeting, the COMEX reviewed the situation and proposed alternative solutions to the president. However, these were not accepted. Faced with this deadlock, Pastef decided to withdraw entirely from government formation. « Pastef-Les Patriotes will not take part in the next government and will not be represented by any minister, » the statement confirmed.

This move could significantly reshape Senegal’s political landscape, arriving at a critical juncture when citizens are demanding urgent economic and social reforms. Despite the breakdown in negotiations, Pastef extended « best wishes for success to the new team », signaling its intent to continue operating from its position in the National Assembly, where Sonko now serves as president. The coming days will reveal the full impact of this political turning point at the highest level of Senegalese governance.
