The Beninese Customs Authority has achieved a historic milestone in its battle against cross-border fraud. On July 12, 2026, a major operation at the southwestern border led to the interception of a substantial shipment of illegally imported mobile devices destined for the domestic market.

Customs officers inspecting confiscated contraband items

Under the leadership of Captain Fortuné Allagbé, the Hillacondji Customs Brigade successfully intercepted the shipment before it could infiltrate illicit distribution networks. In total, 5,574 smuggled Android smartphones were confiscated during the operation.

The breakthrough was made possible through meticulous intelligence gathering and proactive surveillance by dedicated customs teams operating along the border.

Strategic measures to protect the economy

This unprecedented seizure aligns with the broader anti-fraud strategy spearheaded by the Director-General of Customs, Colonel Raouf Malèhossou Aboudou. It underscores the intensified border controls and targeted crackdowns on criminal networks exploiting cross-border trade.

The operation served multiple critical purposes:

  • Shielding state revenue from significant fiscal losses caused by contraband.
  • Ensuring fair competition for legitimate businesses adhering to national regulations.
  • Safeguarding formal sector employment by curbing illicit trade that undermines local markets.
