The political rift between Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has become undeniable. During a press conference in Dakar, the former Prime Minister outlined why his party, Pastef-Les Patriotes, declined to join the new cabinet led by Ahmadou Alamine Mohamed Lô.

Strategic disagreements overshadow collaboration

Sonko revealed that talks with the Head of State uncovered fundamental differences over critical national policies. Key areas of contention include judicial reform, accountability measures, renegotiation of unfavorable economic contracts, and public debt management.

Financial and governance concerns take center stage

The Pastef leader highlighted the lack of sufficient assurances regarding the government’s financial commitments and future dealings with international lenders. He also voiced skepticism toward the administration’s subsidy policies and its approach to judicial governance.

Government composition fuels discord

Beyond programmatic disputes, the cabinet’s makeup intensified friction. Sonko argued that his party, which holds a dominant position in Senegalese politics, deserved substantial representation in the executive branch. He insisted that Pastef could not participate without controlling at least half of the ministerial portfolios.

Additionally, the former Prime Minister questioned the political legitimacy of the new team, despite some members’ ties to his movement. He clarified, however, that his party would not pursue a vote of no confidence for now, ruling out any immediate attempt to topple the government.

Uncertainty looms over post-2024 transition

These developments underscore escalating tensions at the highest levels of government and herald a period of unpredictability in relations between the presidency and the political force behind Senegal’s 2024 political shift.
