Podor’s political landscape shifts as Ibrahima Diam Sow leaves Pastef

Portrait of Ibrahima Diam Sow

A prominent figure in Podor’s political scene has defected from Pastef, sending shockwaves through the department. Ibrahima Diam Sow, former party coordinator, now aligns with the Diomaye-Président coalition, prioritizing national interests over party loyalty.

The political dynamics in Podor have taken an unexpected turn with the departure of Ibrahima Diam Sow, a key local leader of Pastef. Once the party’s first coordinator in Méri and head of the Patriotic Movement of Subjected Citizens (MPI), Sow has publicly severed ties with Ousmane Sonko’s formation.

Sow, who previously served as the party’s communications officer in Podor, cites deep disagreements with Pastef’s current direction. He highlights what he describes as « flagrant contradictions » within the party and warns of an environment he compares to « intellectual dictatorship ». These developments, he argues, have made it impossible for him to continue supporting Pastef’s political agenda.

Embracing a new political path, Sow now backs the Diomaye-Président coalition and pledges his support to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. His decision stems from a guiding principle he passionately defends: « The nation comes before the party. »

As a founding member of Pastef in northern Senegal, Sow played a pivotal role in the party’s early growth. He was instrumental in organizing Ousmane Sonko’s first visit to the region in 2017 and actively participated in numerous mobilization campaigns alongside local figures, including Ibrahima Sy.
