Kalidou Koulibaly’s absence raises concerns for Senegal ahead of FIFA World Cup

As the countdown to the FIFA World Cup continues, Senegal faces growing unease over the prolonged absence of its defensive stalwart and captain, Kalidou Koulibaly. The 34-year-old, who serves as both the backbone of the national team and a key figure at Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League, has been sidelined since early April due to a thigh injury.

Since sustaining the injury during a training session, Koulibaly has yet to resume competitive action. With just over six weeks remaining before the tournament, where the Lions of Teranga will face France, Norway, and Iraq in Group I, the uncertainty surrounding his recovery is becoming a major talking point in Senegalese football circles.

Al-Hilal remains tight-lipped on Koulibaly’s return timeline

During a recent press briefing, Simone Inzaghi, head coach of Al-Hilal, addressed the situation with cautious optimism. « We have two injured players, Malcom and Koulibaly. Malcom has returned and is ready, but Koulibaly suffered a thigh contusion that led to a hematoma. We are monitoring his progress daily, and his return will depend entirely on how his body responds to treatment in the coming days », the Italian tactician explained.

Al-Hilal further detailed that Koulibaly underwent a structured rehabilitation program at the Meena Clinic, located within the club’s headquarters. Medical evaluations conducted in Spain revealed the need for additional therapeutic sessions targeting the anterior thigh muscle. With only six league matches remaining for Al-Hilal, the club has yet to provide a definitive timeline for his comeback.

Koulibaly’s absence has been notable not only in domestic fixtures but also in international duty, as he missed Senegal’s recent friendly matches against Peru (2-0) and Gambia (3-1), as well as the African Cup of Nations final. Fans and pundits alike are now questioning whether he can regain full fitness in time for football’s biggest stage.
