Jihadist group JNIM showcases urban warfare capabilities in new propaganda footage
The Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-affiliated militant organization, has released a propaganda video depicting its April 25 assault on the military camp and airport of Sévaré, located near Mopti in central Mali.
This coordinated attack was part of a broader offensive that targeted multiple Malian cities, executed jointly by JNIM fighters and Tuareg separatists from the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA). The video serves as a testament to the group’s evolving tactics and strategic adaptations in the region’s security landscape.
Urban infiltration and psychological impact
Analysts highlight that the footage demonstrates JNIM’s growing ability to penetrate high-security zones, including airports and military installations, sending a clear message to both Malian forces and their international partners.
“The JNIM has proven its capacity to operate within urban environments, striking critical infrastructure like Sévaré’s airport and military base, while simultaneously challenging the Malian army and its Russian allies,” explains Bakary Sambe, director of the Timbuktu Institute.
Recent offensives reshape Mali’s security dynamics
The April coordinated assaults resulted in significant developments: the FLA reclaimed control of Kidal, and the Malian Defense Minister, Sadio Camara, was killed in an attack near Kati, close to Bamako. Authorities reported 16 injuries in the crossfire.
“What the JNIM has achieved is to push Mali into a prolonged state of neither peace nor war—an ambiguous situation where the group can escalate its offensive strategies,” Sambe notes. He also points to the rising influence of figures like Bina Diarra, one of JNIM’s spokespeople, who are positioning the group as a “legitimate political actor.”
Government responds with counterterrorism measures
In response to the escalating threat, Malian authorities have introduced a reward system for information leading to the capture or elimination of JNIM leaders, reinforcing the nation’s counterterrorism efforts.
The release of this propaganda video coincides with a period of heightened instability, underscoring the challenges faced by Mali in maintaining security and stability amid shifting militant strategies.
