The Gabonese Republic has been elected as a vice-president in the United Nations General Assembly, a historic move marking its return to the UN’s top decision-making body after nearly a decade.
This election on June 2, 2026, positions Gabon among 21 newly appointed vice-presidents for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. Alongside Cabo Verde, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, and Zimbabwe, Gabon will officially begin its one-year term in September 2026, coinciding with the assembly’s opening session.
As a representative of the African regional group, Gabon’s Permanent Mission to the UN will play a pivotal role in shaping the international legislative agenda. Collaborating closely with the elected President Khalilur Rahman, Gabon will take on critical managerial and diplomatic responsibilities, including presiding over plenary sessions.
Under this mandate, Gabon will lead key ordinary and high-level plenary meetings while overseeing the UN’s agenda. Additionally, Gabon will serve on the influential General Committee, responsible for organizing the agenda, coordinating pivotal votes on global resolutions, and managing institutional priorities.
The Gabonese delegation will work in tandem with fellow member states to champion the African Group’s priorities, including sustainable development, climate action, and reforms within the UN system. This aligns with the vision of President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, reinforcing Gabon’s commitment to multilateral cooperation.
