The Gabonese government has taken a decisive step toward modernizing the country’s public transportation system with the official launch of the Compagnie Nationale de Transport (CNT). This strategic merger between Trans’Urb and SOGATRA, spearheaded by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, marks a bold reform aimed at creating a more efficient, reliable, and accessible transport network nationwide.
Preserving jobs while upgrading expertise
One of the CNT’s most impactful achievements so far is safeguarding 1,303 jobs across the sector, ensuring workforce stability. Beyond maintaining employment, the new company is prioritizing professional development, with over 200 drivers already completing advanced training in road safety and customer service—key skills to enhance the passenger experience.
Modern buses and expanded routes
The CNT has introduced 142 brand-new buses to its fleet, with 28 urban lines now operational in Greater Libreville, connecting 609 bus stops. The expansion extends beyond the capital, with seven intercity routes already up and running, gradually improving connectivity across Gabon. For commuters, the changes mean shorter wait times, more predictable schedules, and a safer alternative to informal transport options.
Cutting-edge technical infrastructure
The transformation goes beyond vehicles and routes. Under the leadership of Minister of State for Transport Ulrich Manfoumbi Manfoumbi, the CNT’s technical base has undergone a complete overhaul. Upgraded maintenance workshops, modernized inspection pits, and redesigned parking facilities now provide optimal conditions for the new fleet. A state-of-the-art real-time supervision and regulation center has been established, enabling constant monitoring of buses and swift responses to any traffic disruptions.
Building a financially sustainable transport model
The CNT is breaking from past inefficiencies by adopting a self-sustaining financial model. Ticket revenues will be reinvested directly into vehicle maintenance, fleet upgrades, and operational improvements. This approach underscores Gabon’s commitment to transforming mobility into a catalyst for social inclusion and economic growth, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for all Gabonese citizens.
