Heavy prison sentence for French national in Bamako
A French citizen, identified as an intelligence agent holding diplomatic status, has been sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment by the Malian judiciary. Yann V., who has been held in custody in Bamako since August 2025, was found guilty of compromising the security of the state during a high-profile trial.
The verdict was delivered this Thursday by the criminal chamber of the specialized judicial unit dedicated to combating terrorism. Beyond the decades-long prison term, the court ordered that Yann V. be banned from entering Mali for 20 years following his release and imposed a fine of 5,400 euros.
Espionage and coup allegations
The individual was apprehended on August 13, 2025, during a targeted operation conducted by the State Security, the national intelligence service. Although he was officially part of the France embassy staff in Bamako, he was intercepted alongside several officers from the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa).
These military personnel, who were stripped of their ranks shortly after their arrest, are accused of participating in an espionage ring. The prosecution alleges they were involved in a conspiracy to destabilize the transitional institutions of Mali and prepare a coup d’état. While the French national has been sentenced, the trial for the implicated Malian officers has yet to commence.
Diplomatic friction between Bamako and Paris
The government of France has categorically denied the charges leveled against its national. In response to the judicial ruling, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the accusations as entirely without merit, asserting that the agent was performing a standard security cooperation mission. Paris maintains that it has never engaged, either directly or indirectly, in any efforts to undermine the stability of Mali.
This judicial case has exacerbated the already deep diplomatic rift between the two nations. In the wake of the initial arrest, France halted its counter-terrorism cooperation with Mali and ordered the expulsion of two Malian diplomats from its territory.
Since the military took power following the events of 2020 and 2021, the relationship between Bamako and Paris has seen a significant decline. The Malian authorities have systematically reduced their reliance on Western partners, specifically France, while simultaneously strengthening their strategic and military ties with Russia.
