Police in Dakar recently apprehended a French national in a sweeping crackdown on same-sex relations under the country’s newly toughened legislation.
The individual, described as an engineer in his early thirties who has been residing in Senegal, now faces charges including unnatural acts, criminal conspiracy, money laundering, and an alleged attempt to transmit HIV. His arrest occurred during a series of coordinated detentions across the capital.
Diplomatic intervention from France
French diplomatic missions in Dakar have taken immediate action, with embassy officials confirming they are closely monitoring the case. Consular staff have conducted multiple visits to ensure the detainee’s well-being under diplomatic protection protocols. Authorities in Paris have also maintained direct contact with the man’s relatives and coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Stricter penalties for LGBTQ+ conduct
Earlier this year, Senegal enacted legislation imposing up to a decade behind bars for same-sex relationships. The reform reflects mounting pressure against LGBTQ+ rights in the region. France has reiterated its stance in favor of global decriminalization of homosexuality and opposing discrimination based on sexual orientation.
