As his tenure in Togo draws to a close, European Union Ambassador Gwilym Ceri Jones met with President of the Togolese Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, to review a partnership he describes as flourishing across multiple fronts.
During the farewell audience, the diplomat highlighted the expansion of cooperation between Brussels and Lomé during his mission. This partnership now spans critical sectors such as sustainable development, infrastructure, energy, governance, education, and security. He emphasized his visit to Togo as an opportunity to engage with the head of state, assess progress, and outline the future trajectory of bilateral collaboration.
Investment programs gaining momentum
The ambassador underscored the sharp increase in European investment initiatives in Togo, creating substantial opportunities for both Togolese and European private sectors. This momentum is expected to bolster growth and job creation in key industries, including energy, agriculture, and digital technology.
Security and development go hand in hand
Gwilym Ceri Jones also emphasized the deepening of cooperation in peace and security, which he views as inseparable from development goals. The European Union has strengthened its support for Togolese armed forces, particularly in counter-terrorism efforts and maritime security enhancement.
In addition, the ambassador praised the robust relationship between Togo and the EU, expressing confidence that this partnership will continue to thrive beyond his tenure.
DCP 2021-2027: A roadmap for cooperation
European interventions in Togo are structured around the Joint Multi-Year Programming Document (DCP) 2021-2027, backed by a €201 million funding envelope. This framework prioritizes three key areas: human development and socio-economic inclusion, sustainable agro-industries and natural resource management, and fostering a peaceful, resilient Togolese society with inclusive governance.
A tripartite framework to boost business climate
This cooperative momentum received a significant boost in June with the launch of a tripartite cooperation mechanism involving the Togolese government, Team Europe, and Eurocham Togo. This permanent consultation platform aims to enhance the business environment, attract European investments, and support ongoing economic reforms in Togo.
It is designed to translate cooperation into tangible outcomes: job creation, private sector growth, and structural economic transformation. Both parties view these initiatives as a testament to the strength of a partnership set to endure beyond Ambassador Jones’ departure.
