Tchad’s CPDP Unveils Blueprint to Calm Political Tensions

Five months after its official launch, the Permanent Framework for Political Dialogue (CPDP) in Tchad has broken its silence. Speaking at a press briefing on June 13, 2026, its chair, Pahimi Padacké Albert, introduced a detailed roadmap designed to foster lasting trust and clean up the country’s democratic landscape.

Building bridges through structured dialogue

The CPDP was born out of the May 13, 2025 Political Agreement, uniting all legally registered political parties in Tchad. Its 30-strong steering committee—split evenly between the ruling coalition and the democratic opposition—aims to serve as the engine of much-needed political calm. “Without a calm climate, without a consensual electoral overhaul, and without inclusive participation, no political dialogue can truly rebuild trust,” declared Padacké Albert.

The newly released roadmap is not just a set of ideals; it is an operational guide. It pivots on three core pillars:

1. Electoral System Reform: A Cornerstone for Fairness

This priority area targets sweeping changes across key electoral mechanisms. Reforms include restructuring election oversight bodies, rewriting the electoral code, adjusting parliamentary seat distribution, revisiting senatorial selection rules, and redefining electoral district boundaries. The ultimate goal is to align Tchad’s electoral laws with international transparency benchmarks.

2. Safeguards to Protect the Vote

To shield the electoral process from irregularities, the CPDP plans to implement a robust, reliable voter registry and introduce fair financing rules for political parties. These measures aim to curb manipulation and ensure equitable competition.

3. Inclusive Engagement Across the Board

Sustaining momentum requires collaboration with state institutions, technical partners, and financial backers. It also means keeping an open channel with political parties that initially opted out of the 2025 agreement, ensuring their voices are not sidelined.

Mobilizing the nation behind the plan

Padacké Albert emphasized that success hinges on robust political will at every level. He also called on media outlets to amplify the roadmap, urging citizens to understand the CPDP’s mission and actively support its efforts. The body is now finalizing an action plan with precise steps and a clear timeline. Whether this push for dialogue can ease long-standing tensions and usher in enduring stability remains to be seen.
