Cameroon is making final preparations to host the 51st General Assembly of the Francophonie Parliamentary Assembly (APF) in Yaoundé from July 7 to 12, 2026. This marks the country’s third major international event in recent months, following the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference and the recent visit of Pope Leo XIV.

diplomatic talks and logistical arrangements underway

In line with these preparations, Cameroon’s Ambassador to France, André-Magnus Ekoumou, held a high-level meeting with the President of the National Assembly, Théodore Datouo. The discussions centered on Cameroon’s readiness to welcome delegates and ensure the smooth execution of the event.

The two officials reaffirmed their confidence in the country’s ability to meet the challenges ahead, guided by the strategic vision of President Paul Biya. Special measures have already been implemented at the Cameroonian embassy in France to streamline the issuance of courtesy visas for incoming delegations.

parliamentary democracy and cultural initiatives take center stage

During the meeting, President Datouo underscored the importance of reinforcing parliamentary democracy in Cameroon. He also commended Ambassador Ekoumou for his dedicated support to Cameroonian nationals in France, particularly in facilitating their participation in Promote 2026, the upcoming business summit scheduled at the Palais des Congrès in Yaoundé.

The agenda also included discussions on the establishment of a new parliamentary museum within the National Assembly. President Datouo highlighted the need for international collaboration, particularly with France, to draw on best practices and incorporate digital innovation into the museum’s design.

key challenges and opportunities

One of the major highlights of the 2026 APF Assembly will be the election of the next Secretary-General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF). The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda are among the leading African candidates vying for the position.
