Infrastructure
Cameroon’s road network expands with 2,442 km paved, yet obstacles remain
While significant progress has been made in Cameroon’s road infrastructure, critical challenges continue to hinder sector performance. The Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, recently addressed these issues during a public conference in Yaoundé.
Progress amid persistent roadblock challenges
During a high-profile gathering at the Government Action Showcase (SAGO 2026), the Minister of Public Works outlined the sector’s achievements and ongoing hurdles. The conference focused on the mid-term assessment of the 2020-2030 National Development Strategy, highlighting completed projects since the start of 2026 and identifying roadblocks affecting project execution.
The minister emphasized the transformative potential of road infrastructure, noting that it serves as both an economic growth catalyst and a territorial cohesion tool. These efforts align with President Paul Biya’s commitments under the National Development Strategy, with road projects playing a central role in national progress.
Key achievements in Cameroon’s road sector
The Ministry’s presentation revealed remarkable statistics: 2,442 kilometers of new asphalt roads and rehabilitation of 833 kilometers of existing degraded routes. However, maintenance delays persist as a significant concern.
Several factors continue to impede optimal performance:
- Security concerns in certain regions
- Complex funding mobilization procedures
- Extended market award timelines
- Contractor cash flow difficulties
- Limited budget allocation for routine maintenance
Despite these obstacles, the minister highlighted substantial progress over the past five years. The total paved road network expanded from 8,498 kilometers in 2020 to 10,939 kilometers by the end of 2025 — an average annual increase of over 488 kilometers.
Future roadmap for Cameroon’s infrastructure
Looking ahead, the 2026 initiatives focus on implementing the President’s highest directives, with particular emphasis on:
- Developing the national road network
- Enhancing infrastructure quality standards
- Strengthening inter-territorial connectivity
The government remains committed to transforming Cameroon’s road network into a reliable backbone for economic development and social integration.
