Healthcare facilities situated in Cameroon’s major urban centers are regularly grappling with a disturbing number of deceased individuals whose remains are never claimed by their families. This persistent issue complicates the management of morgue capacity and preservation efforts, creating numerous health and logistical challenges.
Lifeless bodies can remain in hospital cold rooms for extended periods without any family member coming forward. This recurring problem is particularly acute in cities like Douala, Yaoundé, and Bafoussam. On July 7th, the administration of Yaoundé General Hospital issued a public statement, highlighting the presence of 80 unclaimed bodies in its morgue. While some have been identified, many others remain anonymous.
