The transitional government in Burkina Faso has implemented a three-month suspension for a pair of Islamic organizations. This move comes amid heightened friction following the detention of the well-known religious leader, Mohamad Ishaq Kindo.
Under the leadership of Ibrahim Traoré, the administration has intensified its oversight of civil society. The Ministry of Territorial Administration issued two decrees on Tuesday, June 9, targeting the Coordination of Young Muslims of Burkina Faso and the As Salam association. The former is accused of disturbing public order, while the latter is cited for conducting activities that deviate from its official purpose.
The context of Imam Kindo’s arrest
These administrative actions are closely linked to the situation surrounding Mohamad Ishaq Kindo, a major figure in the nation’s Sunni community. The imam was taken into custody after voicing opposition to a legislative proposal designed to increase state regulation of religious practices. In a country where approximately 60% of the population identifies as Muslim, his arrest on May 26 has sparked significant concern.
The exact location where the imam is being held remains undisclosed by official channels. Furthermore, several of his followers have been detained by security forces after participating in demonstrations calling for his immediate release.
A tightening grip on civil society
Since seizing power in a September 2022 coup, Ibrahim Traoré has consistently tightened the grip on dissenting opinions. The government maintains that these restrictive measures are essential for national stability and to counter the persistent jihadist insurgency that has plagued Burkina Faso for over a decade.
Massive wave of association closures
This is not an isolated incident. Between April and May, the state suspended 811 associations and dissolved another 118 organizations, citing failures to meet administrative requirements. These sweeping actions have raised alarms among observers regarding the future of public freedoms and security news in this Sahelian nation currently facing a grave crisis.
