The healthcare landscape in Benin is undergoing a significant transformation. On Thursday, April 16, 2026, Professor Benjamin Hounkpatin, the Minister of Health, officially took delivery of 600 state-of-the-art oxygen concentrators. This equipment is destined to upgrade the emergency response capabilities of 23 medical facilities across the nation.

High-tech equipment for critical care

Acquired through UNICEF with financial backing from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, this initiative represents an investment exceeding 205,450 USD (approximately 116 million CFA francs). These “10LPM single flow” units are designed to provide a continuous and reliable oxygen supply, which is essential for treating patients suffering from respiratory failure.

The distribution of these devices will focus on 23 hospitals and clinics located in several key departments, including Alibori, Littoral, Atacora, Borgou, Donga, Couffo, and Atlantique.

Combating maternal and infant mortality

According to Minister Benjamin Hounkpatin, this delivery is a cornerstone of a broader strategy to lower maternal, neonatal, and child mortality rates. During the handover ceremony, he emphasized that ensuring oxygen availability is a top priority, stating that these tools reflect the government’s dedication to providing high-quality, equitable healthcare to every citizen.

A strong international partnership

The event was attended by the Chinese Ambassador, H.E. Wei Zhang, and UNICEF’s Resident Representative, Ousmane Niang. The Ambassador praised the strong ties between China and Benin, confirming Beijing’s ongoing commitment to supporting the local health sector. Meanwhile, the UNICEF representative noted that these contributions, funded by individual donors in China, will significantly bolster the resilience of Benin’s healthcare system during life-threatening emergencies.

This enhancement of technical resources is a testament to the government’s continuous efforts to modernize national medical infrastructure and deliver superior public health services.
